2007-04-30 00:00

On April 30, 2007, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi held talks in the office building of the Foreign Ministry with his visiting Canadian counterpart Peter MacKay.

During the talks, Yang said China and Canada have established a strategic partnership and China will work with Canada to promote common interests and maintain exchanges and dialogue at all levels on a basis of a forward-looking attitude. China will give full play to the role of strategic working groups and other bilateral consultation mechanisms to deepen cooperation in fields such as economy, trade, energy resources, science and technology, culture and education, said Yang. China is also ready to strengthen consultations and coordination on major international and regional issues and properly handle disputes and sensitive issues, so as to push forward the sound and steady development of bilateral strategic partnership, Yang said.

Mackay said Canada highly values relations with China and will work with China to strengthen dialogue, enhance mutual trust and promote pragmatic cooperation in all areas based on the spirit of mutual respect and seeking common ground while reserving differences, so as to enrich bilateral strategic partnership. The Canadian government will adhere to the one-China policy and will not develop official ties with Taiwan, Mackay reaffirmed.

The two sides also exchanged views on issues on United Nations, Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as other international and regional issues of common concern.
