2023-10-25 23:45

On the afternoon of October 25, 2023, President Xi Jinping met with Governor of the U.S. State of California Gavin Newsom at the Great Hall of the People.

Xi Jinping pointed out that China and the United States are the world's two largest economies who account for more than a third of the global GDP and nearly a quarter of the global population, and whose bilateral trade makes up a fifth of the global total; the interests of the two countries are closely intertwined. The progress made in China-U.S. relations is hard-won and should be cherished all the more. China's U.S. policy remains one of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation. China will continue to work in this direction, and hopes that the United States will work with China in the same direction.

Xi Jinping happily recalled his visit to California and briefed Newsom on China's green transition and relevant local development. Xi Jinping pointed out that the sound development of China-U.S. relations requires pooling the strength of all sides. The foundation and hope of China-U.S. relations lies with the people, the future lies with the youth, and the vitality lies with sub-national entities. Xi Jinping said that he highly values and supports exchanges across various sectors and sub-national cooperation between China and the United States. He expressed the hope that Gavin Newsom's visit will enhance mutual understanding and play a positive role in expanding cooperation between China and California and promoting the sound and steady development of China-U.S. relations. Xi said there is great potential in China-U.S. cooperation on green development and climate response. There is every reason for the two sides to strengthen cooperation in these areas and make it a new highlight in the development of China-U.S. relations.

Gavin Newsom said that China has made remarkable achievements in development in the past several decades. The achievements in the field of new energy in recent years are particularly impressive. No other bilateral relationship is more important than the one between the United States and China, and the U.S.-China relationship is vital to the future of the United States and bears on the well-being of its people. Sub-national exchanges are an important part of U.S.-China relations. Historically, the Chinese communities made important contributions to the development of California, and California has always been an important gateway for U.S. cooperation with China. Gavin Newsom said that he agrees with the principles that President Xi Jinping has put forward for the development of U.S.-China relations, and is willing to, in the same spirit, push California to strengthen exchanges with China and seek closer cooperation in fields such as climate change and new energy. California is willing to be China's long-term, stable and strong partner.

Wang Yi was present at the meeting.
