2023-11-17 23:55

On the morning of November 16, 2023 local time, President Xi Jinping met with President of Mexico Andrés Manuel López Obrador in San Francisco.

Xi Jinping pointed out that the friendship between China and Mexico has stood the test of the evolving international landscape and grown stronger over time. Last year, the two countries  celebrated the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, and this year marks the 10th anniversary of the establishment of China-Mexico comprehensive strategic partnership. Currently, the strategic, complementary and mutually beneficial nature of China-Mexico relations has become increasingly prominent, and their mutual understanding and support on issues involving each other's core interests and major concerns have become firmer. China attaches great importance to China-Mexico relations and is ready to work with Mexico to enhance  synergy of strategies, tap into cooperation potential and leverage complementary advantages to take relations between the two countries to a new level.

Xi Jinping emphasized that China supports Mexico in pursuing an independent development path suited to its national conditions, and is ready to strengthen exchanges with Mexico in national governance. Bilateral trade volume between China and Mexico has increased by more than 7,000 times since the establishment of diplomatic relations, and the highlights of cooperation in fields like railways, automobiles and new energy are abundant. The two sides should make good use of the intergovernmental working mechanisms between the two countries to deepen cooperation in traditional fields like infrastructure development, expand cooperation in emerging industries such as finance and electric vehicles, and deepen cooperation in counternarcotics law enforcement. The two sides should actively support each other in organizing events for people-to-people and cultural exchanges such as cultural performances and exhibitions, enhance multilateral cooperation, firmly uphold multilateralism and promote greater democracy in international relations, and safeguard international fairness and justice and the legitimate rights and interests of fellow developing countries. Next year marks the 10th anniversary of the China-CELAC Forum, and China is ready to work with Mexico to promote the steady and long-term development of the relations between China and Latin American and Caribbean states in the new era.

Xi Jinping once again expressed condolences over the recent hurricane disaster that hit Mexico's Pacific coast, and said that China will provide great assistance for Mexico in the procurement of disaster relief supplies.

Andrés Manuel López Obrador said that both Mexico and China have splendid civilizations and the two peoples have forged deep mutual understanding and affinity and treated each other as brothers. At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, China was the first country to offer assistance, providing a large number of precious anti-pandemic supplies to Mexico and helping Mexico tide over the difficulties. More recently, after Mexico was hit by a severe Pacific Ocean hurricane, China immediately expressed sympathy and support, for which Mexico is grateful. Both Mexico and China safeguard their own independence and firmly oppose interference in other countries' internal affairs. Mexico will, as always, adhere to its friendly policy toward China, firmly support each other with China, facilitate Chinese enterprises' investment cooperation in Mexico, and deepen mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields as well as cooperation in combating drug production and trafficking. Mexico is ready to enhance cooperation with China on multilateral affairs and actively promote relations between Latin American and Caribbean countries and China.

Cai Qi and Wang Yi, among others, were present at the meeting.
