On February 2, 2024, in the lead up to the Spring Festival, a festival celebrated by both the Chinese and Vietnamese people, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and Chinese President Xi Jinping and General Secretary of the Communist Party of Viet Nam (CPV) Central Committee Nguyen Phu Trong exchanged letters of Spring Festival greetings.

In his letter, Xi Jinping extended his sincere greetings and best wishes for the new year to Nguyen Phu Trong, the CPV and the Vietnamese government and people on behalf of the CPC, the Chinese government and the Chinese people.

Xi Jinping noted that the year 2023 was epoch-making in the history of China-Viet Nam relations, which saw frequent high-level exchanges, enhanced political mutual trust, accelerated synergizing of development strategies, robust momentum of comprehensive cooperation, vibrant people-to-people and cultural exchanges and an ever-deepening traditional friendship. Amidst the friendly atmosphere marking the 15th anniversary of the China-Viet Nam comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership, Xi Jinping visited Viet Nam as promised, completing the third round of mutual visits between him and General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong in the new era. During the visit, he and General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong jointly announced that the two countries will build a China-Viet Nam community with a shared future that carries strategic significance, opening up a new journey and a new chapter for the development of relations between the two parties and two countries, and demonstrating the firm will and resolve of the two sides to forge ahead against  all odds in solidarity and cooperation.

Xi Jinping said with the changing of seasons, a new chapter unfolds every day. In 2024, he stands ready to maintain close contact with General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong in guiding the two sides to make joint solid efforts to promote high-level and high-quality development of exchanges and cooperation via all channels, at all levels and in all sectors in line with the new positioning of bilateral relations. The two sides need to work to ensure with practical work and tangible outcomes that the vision of China-Viet Nam community with a shared future will take root and come to fruition, and inject new impetus into the modernization drives of the two countries, so as to provide positive energy for the prosperity and development of the Asia-Pacific region and make greater contributions to the cause of peace and progress of mankind.

In his letter of greetings, Nguyen Phu Trong said bilateral relations have shown good momentum of growth and achieved significant progress since his official visit to China in October 2022 following the 20th National Congress of the CPC. General Secretary Xi Jinping's successful state visit to Viet Nam in December 2023 demonstrates the great importance the CPC, China and General Secretary Xi Jinping attach to Viet Nam's socialist causes and Viet Nam-China relations. During Xi's visit to Viet Nam, the two sides carried out comprehensive and in-depth exchanges in the spirit of the profound camaraderie-plus-brotherhood friendship, issued a Joint Statement on Further Deepening and Elevating the Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership and Building a China-Viet Nam Community with a Shared Future That Carries Strategic Significance, and signed dozens of cooperation documents of historic significance. These fruitful results have laid a solid foundation and provided strategic guidance for the relations between the two parties and two countries to enter a more sound, practical and fruitful new development stage and maintain the positive momentum of long-term and stable development.

Nguyen Phu Trong said he highly values and is ready to maintain exchanges and contact with Comrade General Secretary Xi Jinping to continuously guide the departments at all levels and various localities of the two sides to follow through on the important common understandings and agreements reached by high-level officials of both sides during General Secretary Xi Jinping's visit to Viet Nam. This will help promote the development of relations between the two parties and two countries, serve the interests of the two peoples, and contribute to regional and global peace, stability, cooperation and development. Nguyen Phu Trong wishes the CPC continuous development and growth, the People's Republic of China prosperity and strength, and the brotherly Chinese people a happy and peaceful New Year.
