Wang Yi Has a Phone Call with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian

On December 11, 2023, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi had a phone call with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian at the latter's request.

Hossein Amir-Abdollahian highly appreciated China's efforts to realize a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza during its presidency of the UN Security Council, thanked the Chinese side for its contribution to promoting the reconciliation between Iran and Saudi Arabia, and expressed Iran's readiness to strengthen cooperation with China in various fields and constantly push forward the development of Iran-China relations.

Wang Yi said that China stands ready to work with Iran to follow through on the important common understandings reached at the two meetings between President Xi Jinping and President Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi, strengthen communication, consolidate mutual trust, expand cooperation, coordinate and cooperate on international and multilateral occasions, practice true multilateralism, safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of both countries and fellow developing countries and international fairness and justice, and promote the steady and long-term development of China-Iran relations. China supports Iran and Saudi Arabia in continuing to improve relations and promoting solidarity and cooperation of regional countries, so as to keep regional peace and security truly in their own hands.

The two sides mainly had an exchange of views on the situation in Gaza. Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said that Iran opposes the killings of women and children and advocates an immediate ceasefire and end of the fighting in Gaza, as well as the opening of humanitarian relief corridors. The UN should play an important role in the future resolution of the Palestinian question. Iran is willing to maintain close communication with regional countries to safeguard regional security and stability. Iran supports the Global Security Initiative proposed by China, and expects China to be more actively committed to easing the situation in Gaza, resolving the Palestinian question, and maintaining regional peace and stability.

Wang Yi stressed that China's position on the issue of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict can be summarized as an immediate ceasefire and ending the fighting, ensuring humanitarian assistance, and restoring the two-state solution. China holds a consistent position with Arab countries and enjoys a high degree of consensus with Islamic countries and the international community. All countries should make a stronger voice and form a more consistent position in this regard. The Chinese side holds that any arrangement concerning the future of Palestine must fully reflect the will of the Palestinian people, fully respect the Palestinian people's right to statehood and self-determination, and embody the principle of "Palestinian-owned, Palestinian-led and Palestinian-administered". China is ready to strengthen communication and coordination with Arab and Islamic countries to gradually create conditions for a return to the two-state solution and to continue to play a role in the effective resolution of the Palestinian question.
