On May 24, 2007, Chinese Vice Premier Wu Yi met in Washington with United States Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and other U.S. senators, and members of Senate Finance Committee respectively, exchanging views with them.

Wu elaborated China's stance on China-U.S. ties and economic and trade cooperation, saying that the two countries shoulder important responsibilities in safeguarding world peace and promoting common development. To develop sound and steady China-U.S. ties conforms to the fundamental interests of the two countries and their people, and is also conducive to peace and prosperity of the Asia-Pacific region and the world at large, she said. China is ready to strengthen dialogue, exchanges and cooperation with the United States, build mutual trust and properly handle differences, so as to push for sustained and steady development of bilateral ties, she added.

The U.S. senators said the two countries have maintained friendly ties and it is very important to them to exchange views on strategic issues. They expressed hope that both sides will strengthen communication, build understanding and iron out misunderstandings to contribute to the development of bilateral ties.

Wu Yi and other members of the Chinese delegation also answered questions from the U.S. side with abundant facts and statistics on such issues as China-U.S. trade, RMB exchange rate, protection of intellectual property rights, climate change, energy, environment and six-party talks.
