On May 25, 2007, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi met in the office building of the Foreign Ministry with visiting Maltese Foreign Minister Michael Frendo, who is here in China for the seventh meeting of China-Malta joint committee on trade and economy.

Yang hailed the sound development of bilateral ties since the establishment of diplomatic ties 35 years ago. He also appreciated Malta's adherence to the one-China policy on the Taiwan question, indicating that China attaches importance to developing traditional friendly cooperative ties with Malta. China is ready to work with Malta to continue to push for continuous development of bilateral ties in accordance with the principle of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefits, he added.

Frendo said Malta deems China its good friend and partner and it is the consensus reached by the Maltese government and people to continue maintaining and developing ties with China. Malta will continue its adherence to the one-China policy to push bilateral ties to a higher level and play a positive role in promoting China-EU ties, he said.

Both sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues of common concern.
