Vice Foreign Minister Wang Yi Pays Working Visit to Turkey

From April 6 to 7, 2008, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Wang Yi paid a working visit to Turkey, during which he met with Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan, Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Ertugrul Apakan and Interior Ministry Undersecretary. Wang thanked for the thoughtful arrangements the Turkish government has made for the successful relay of the Beijing Olympic torch in Istanbul. He emphasized that the Olympic torch is a symbol of friendship between Chinese people and people of all other countries and represents the Olympic spirit of unity and harmony. Any attempts to tarnish the Olympic spirit are going against the will of the people, he said, expressing hope for closer cooperation with Turkey for the security of the Beijing Olympic Games. The Turkish side congratulated the successful relay of the Beijing Olympic torch in Istanbul, adding that Turkey sincerely wishes and believes the games will be a great success. Turkey is willing to strengthen consultation and cooperation with China in this regard, the Turkish side noted. Both sides also exchanged in-depth views on how to further bilateral ties in the new period.
