On November 6, 2023, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Foreign Minister of Australia Penny Wong in Beijing.

Wang Yi said that last year, President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese held a meeting in Bali, charting the course for improving and growing bilateral relations. Wang Yi said that they have enhanced mutual understanding and taken a step forward to improve bilateral relations every time they have met since then. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's current visit is an important event for China-Australia relations, and China believes that through concerted efforts of the two sides, the visit will be a success, and in preparation for the next stage, will promote the two countries to join hands for cooperation in the future.

Penny Wong said that Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's current visit coincides with the 50th anniversary of Prime Minister Gough Whitlam's visit to China and is of special importance. Australia is glad to see that the two sides have made positive progress in dialogue and cooperation in trade and other fields, properly managed differences, and kept improving bilateral relations. Growing relations with China is in alignment with the interests of Australia. Australia looks forward to the visit yielding positive outcomes and pushing bilateral relations to a new stage.

Wang Yi emphasized that between China and Australia, there are no historical problems or conflicts of interest, and their common interests far outweigh differences. In recent years, China-Australia relations saw some twists and turns, and the lessons should be learned. China always believes that the two sides should focus more on the positive agendas, view each other in a rational, friendly, and inclusive way, pursue a proactive, pragmatic and objective policy, meet each other halfway, handle differences properly, expand cooperation, form a virtuous circle of constant upward growth, and ensure a sustained, sound, and stable development of China-Australia relations.
