Wang Yi Meets with Foreign Minister of Brazil Mauro Vieira

2023-11-29 23:55

On November 28, 2023 local time, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met Foreign Minister of Brazil Mauro Vieira in New York.

Wang Yi first conveyed President Xi Jinping's cordial greetings to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Wang Yi said, the year 2023 is an important year in the history of China-Brazil relations. On the 100th day of his presidency, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva paid a successful visit to China, where he had in-depth strategic communication with President Xi Jinping and reached important common understandings. The two sides have maintained intensive high-level exchanges, effectively enhanced political mutual trust and promoted mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields. Next year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Brazil, and the two sides should take this opportunity to lift bilateral relations to a new level.

Mauro Vieira said, the Brazilian side attaches great importance to its relations with China and is ready to work with China to follow through on the important common understandings reached by the two heads of state and jointly celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations next year. He looks forward to maintaining high-level exchanges, strengthening cooperation in various fields and pushing for greater development of bilateral relations.

The two sides had an exchange of views mainly on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Wang Yi said, China and Brazil are comprehensive strategic partners and have always coordinated closely in multilateral affairs. The current world focus is on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. As the rotating president of the Security Council last month, Brazil played an important mediating role. Since assuming the rotating presidency this month, China has actively promoted the Security Council to take action and presided over the adoption of the first Security Council resolution since the current round of Palestinian-Israeli conflict. But this is only the first step. All parties should strive for a new consensus in the Security Council, push for a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire, release the detained personnel and return to the two-state solution, the fundamental solution to the issue. The re-ignition of the flames of war must not be allowed, as it would cause an even greater humanitarian disaster.

Mauro Vieira thanked China for proposing to hold the high-level meeting of the Security Council, saying that it is an important meeting and President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has instructed him to come to New York specially for the meeting. The Brazilian side agrees with China's position that all parties should first strive for the extension of the temporary ceasefire and eventually realize peaceful coexistence between Palestine and Israel through the two-state solution. Brazil expects China to play an influential and leading role and is ready to work closely with China to push for new actions by the Security Council and send a unanimous and clear message.
