On the morning of January 17, 2024, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) Zhao Leji held talks with President of the Chamber of Deputies of the Dominican Republic Alfredo Pacheco via video link at the Great Hall of the People.

Zhao Leji said that the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the Dominican Republic in May 2018 opened a new chapter in the development of bilateral relations. Over the past more than five years, the two heads of state have maintained close communication, charting the course and drawing a blueprint for the development of the relationship between China and the Dominican Republic. The continuously deepening political mutual trust, fruitful outcomes in economic and trade cooperation, and increasingly close people-to-people and cultural exchanges fully prove that the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the Dominican Republic is the common aspiration of the people and the trend of the times and serves the fundamental interests of the two countries and the two peoples.

Zhao Leji stressed that China appreciates the Dominican Republic's adherence to the one-China principle. There is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is part of China. The universal consensus among the international community and stable pattern of adhering to the one-China principle will not change. China and the Dominican Republic are good friends for common development and good partners for win-win cooperation. Zhao expressed the hope that the two sides will focus on the eight major steps China will take to support the joint pursuit of high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, which was put forward by President Xi Jinping, speed up the alignment of development strategies and needs, and push for more cooperation outcomes. He also hopes that the two sides will strengthen multilateral coordination and cooperation and jointly promote the implementation of the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative.

Zhao Leji said that the NPC of China is willing to work with the Congress of the Dominican Republic to jointly consolidate the political foundation for the development of bilateral relations, facilitate practical cooperation between the two countries, further improve relevant legal systems, and create a sound legal environment for strengthening investment cooperation and expanding personnel exchanges. He also called on the two sides to deepen friendly exchanges at all levels and in various fields, increase exchanges and interactions between senior legislators, special committees, friendship groups, and deputies of the NPC and the Congress of the Dominican Republic, enhance mutual trust and friendship, and consolidate popular support for the friendship between the two countries.

Zhao Leji shared more information on China's system of people's congresses, the whole-process people's democracy, and Chinese modernization. He said, China is willing to strengthen exchanges and mutual learning with developing countries, including the Dominican Republic, jointly advance political democracy in a way that suits the national conditions of one's own country, share development achievements, and achieve common prosperity.

Alfredo Pacheco said, the Dominican Republic abides by the one-China principle, and it is the consensus of all political parties in the Dominican Republic to continuously deepen relations with China. During his visit to China with a cross-party delegation, he personally experienced the tremendous achievements of China's development, which further strengthened his belief that the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Dominican Republic and China is of great significance to the people of the Dominican Republic. He thanked China for its valuable support to the Dominican Republic in economic and social development, trade and investment, medical and health care and other fields. The Chamber of Deputies of the Dominican Republic is willing to strengthen friendly cooperation with the NPC of China, deepen exchanges in legislation and other fields, and play a positive role in promoting the steady and long-term development of bilateral relations and enhancing friendship between the two peoples.
