On February 16, 2024 local time, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron at the latter's request on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference.

Wang Yi said, as the international situation is now undergoing changes and instabilities with resurfacing Cold War mentality, rampant protectionism, and sluggish economic recovery, the world faces challenges one after another. China and the UK, both permanent members of the UN Security Council, should enhance strategic communication and play their due roles in promoting security and maintaining peace. To this end, both sides should make joint efforts to expand the convergence of interests, strengthen exchanges and cooperation, properly handle differences and disputes, and bring China-UK relations back on the right track of sound and steady development. It not only serves the fundamental and long-term interests of both countries but also meets the common expectations of the international community.

David Cameron said that the UK side is willing to view UK-China relations from a strategic perspective, develop more constructive bilateral relations with the Chinese side, and handle disputes and solve problems with mutual respect. The UK side will continue promoting cooperation in areas that serve the shared interests of both sides, and expects to strengthen dialogue with the Chinese side on renewable energy, economy and trade, education and others. As permanent members of the UN Security Council, the UK and China should jointly safeguard peace and security and build a better world.

Wang Yi said that China has the best records among major countries on peace and security. China's development means a stronger force for peace and a greater stabilizing factor. China advocates and practices true multilateralism and firmly upholds the UN-centered international system, the basic norms governing international relations with the purposes and principles of the UN Charter at its core, and the international order based on international law.
