Wang Yi Talks about China's Views on the Current Situation in Gaza

2024-01-14 23:55

On January 14, 2024 local time, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry jointly met the press after their talks in Cairo.

When asked by a journalist about China's views on the current situation in Gaza, Wang Yi said, the conflict in Gaza continues to escalate, causing widespread casualties among innocent civilians and a severe humanitarian catastrophe, with the negative spillover effects rapidly spreading. China has all along stood on the side of fairness and justice, worked with Arab and Islamic countries to put an end to the conflict and violence, done its best to protect the safety of civilians, and made unremitting efforts to promote a comprehensive, just, and sustainable solution to the Palestinian question at an early date.

Wang Yi stressed that the Palestinian question has been unresolved for 76 years. This historical injustice shall not continue any longer. Regarding the current situation in Gaza, the Chinese side holds the view:

First, the top priority now is to cease the fire and end the fighting at an early date. The conflict in Gaza has killed over 20,000 people, and the situation is extremely urgent and dangerous. The international community must take immediate action and focus all efforts on urging ceasefire and cessation of hostilities, protecting the safety of civilians, and sparing people from more miseries.

Second, it is a moral responsibility to ensure humanitarian aid. The infrastructure in the Gaza Strip has been completely destroyed, and over two million residents in Gaza are struggling on the verge of survival. It is necessary to effectively implement the Security Council resolution on humanitarian aid in Gaza and establish a humanitarian relief mechanism as soon as possible to ensure the rapid, safe, barrier-free and sustainable delivery of humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza. China has decided to provide the third batch of emergency humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza.

Third, the will of the Palestinian people must be fully respected regarding the future arrangements of Gaza. Ceasefire and cessation of hostilities are the fundamental prerequisites for the governance of Gaza. "The people of Palestine administering Palestine" is the basic principle for discussing the future of Gaza. Strengthening the authority of the Palestinian National Authority and supporting Palestine's internal reconciliation is the realistic approach to ensuring "The people of Palestine administering Palestine". The international community should listen carefully to the legitimate concerns of regional countries, and the future governance of Gaza should be an important step toward the two-state solution.

Fourth, the implementation of the two-state solution is a sure path toward a just settlement of the Palestinian question. The essence of the Palestinian question is to correct historical injustice. Justice must be returned to the Palestinian people at an early date, and a political settlement must be achieved in accordance with relevant UN resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative by establishing an independent state of Palestine that enjoys full sovereignty on the basis of the 1967 borders and with east Jerusalem as its capital. China calls for the convening of a larger, more authoritative, and more effective international peace conference to set a specific timetable and formulate a road map for implementing the two-state solution, support the early resumption of the Palestinian-Israeli peace talks, and ultimately realize the peaceful coexistence of Palestine and Israel and the harmonious coexistence of the Arab and Jewish nations.
