Wang Yi Elaborates on China's Solemn Position on the Situation in Taiwan

2024-01-14 23:41

On January 14, 2024 local time, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who is on his visit to Egypt, met the press alongside Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry after their talks in Cairo.

When asked by a journalist about China's views on cross-Strait relations and the situation in Taiwan after the election in the Taiwan Region, Wang Yi said that the election in the Taiwan Region is a local affair of China. No matter what the election result is, it will not change the basic fact that there is only one China in the world and Taiwan is part of China, nor will it change the international community's prevailing consensus on upholding the one-China principle.

Wang Yi said, "80 years ago, in Cairo, where we are today, China, the US and the UK released the Cairo Declaration, which stipulates clearly that all the territories Japan has stolen from the Chinese, such as Taiwan, shall be restored to China." Since then, Article 8 of the Potsdam Proclamation jointly released by China, the US, the UK and the Soviet Union in 1945 stipulates that "the terms of the Cairo Declaration shall be carried out". Japan accepted the Potsdam Proclamation and declared its unconditional surrender. This series of documents with international legal effect constitutes an integral part of the post-WWII international order, and also lays down the historical and legal foundation that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory.

Wang Yi stressed that Taiwan has never been a country, nor was it in the past, nor will it be in the future! "Taiwan independence" has never been possible, not in the past, and even more so in the future! Anyone on the island of Taiwan who attempts to engage in "Taiwan independence" is splitting China's territory and will be severely punished by history and law. Whoever violates the one-China principle in the world is interfering in China's internal affairs and infringing on China's sovereignty, which is bound to be rejected by all Chinese people and even the international community.

Wang Yi said that "Taiwan independence" seriously threatens the well-being of Taiwan compatriots, seriously damages the fundamental interests of the Chinese nation, and will also seriously undermine peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. It leads nowhere and is truly a dead end. China will realize complete reunification and Taiwan will surely return to China. China believes that the international community will continue to support the just cause of the Chinese people in opposing the separatist activities of "Taiwan independence" and striving for national reunification in accordance with the one-China principle.
