Zhao Leji Meets with President of the Maldives Mohamed Muizzu

On January 11, 2024, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) Zhao Leji met with President of the Maldives Mohamed Muizzu in Beijing.

Zhao Leji said that President Xi Jinping and President Mohamed Muizzu jointly announced the elevation of China-Maldives relations to a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership yesterday, which is an important milestone in the history of bilateral relations. The two sides should implement the important common understandings reached by the two heads of state, carry forward the traditional friendship, consolidate strategic mutual trust, expand practical cooperation, and work to open a new chapter in China-Maldives relations. Zhao Leji introduced China's philosophy and outcomes of building a community with a shared future for mankind and addressing climate change, and expressed that the NPC of China is willing to work with the People's Majlis of the Maldives to strengthen exchanges at all levels, deepen the exchange of legislative experience in deepening sustainable development, environmental protection and other aspects, and provide legal guarantee for bilateral cooperation.

Mohamed Muizzu said that the Maldives attaches great importance to developing relations with China, stays firmly committed to the one-China principle, and is willing to work with China to continue the traditional friendship, jointly develop high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, and constantly upgrade the level of the Maldives-China relations.
