Li Qiang Meets with UN Secretary-General António Guterres

On the afternoon of September 7, 2023 local time, Premier Li Qiang of the State Council met with Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) António Guterres on the sidelines of leaders' meetings on East Asia cooperation in Jakarta.

Li Qiang said that the more turbulent the current international landscape is and the more challenging the situation is, the more solidarity and cooperation the international community needs to respond to challenges. The international community should adopt the vision of common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security, keep to the philosophy of open and inclusive development, and jointly reject the move to overstretch the concept of security on economic issues and politicize economic issues. The international community should enhance the reform of the global economic governance system, earnestly increase the representation and say of developing countries in international financial institutions, and actively and properly resolve debt issues facing developing countries according to the principle of joint action and fair burden-sharing. The international community should stick to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement, and steadily advance international cooperation on climate change in accordance with the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities.

Li Qiang pointed out that this year marks the 10th anniversary of the building of a human community with a shared future and the Belt and Road Initiative put forth by President Xi Jinping. In recent years, President Xi Jinping has successively put forth the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative and the Global Civilization Initiative, providing China's solutions for resolving global development and governance issues. China will continue to firmly support the UN in playing the core role in international affairs, and stands ready to work with the UN to jointly promote the building of a human community with a shared future.

António Guterres said that in the face of multiple challenges, all countries should adhere to solidarity, enhance mutual trust, prevent the world economy from fragmentation, and jointly respond to global challenges. China has played an important role in advancing the international agenda. The UN is ready to strengthen dialogue and cooperation with China to promote the reform of the international economic governance system, help developing countries acquire enough resources, respond to such challenges as food security, public health and climate change, and contribute to realizing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
